Synthetic Vitamins vs. Natural Vitamins

The SHOTGUN Approach
A lot of people use the "shot-gun" technique of taking vitamins. In the hope that they'll get everything they need to be healthy, they bombard and saturate their bodies with high potency vitamins. Almost everywhere you look people are recommending co-enzyme Q10, 400 units of vitamin E, folic acid, B6, B12, at least 500 mg. of vitamin C, magnesium, B vitamins, beta carotene and don't forget calcium for the bones, I'm sure you've also heard the old saying, "Take your vitamins and you'll grow up to be big and strong." But let's look at this more closely.

What is a vitamin and what is its purpose?

"VITAMIN" comes from the word vita, which means life-essential for the existence and continuation of life. Natural vitamins are alive. All vitamins in their natural state occur in COMPLEXES.

"COMPLEXES" comes from the word complexes, meaning interlaced or intricate, which means puzzling, detailed parts. Vitamin complexes are composed of various interconnecting parts that function together as a whole. In other words, they don't work independent of the other parts. You can't take an individual part of a vitamin and expect it to work without re-combining it with the other parts.

Vitamin complexes are composed of many parts-trace minerals, associative vitamins, enzymes (those parts that do the work of the vitamin), etc. Synthetic vitamins are individual, isolated parts without the other naturally occurring helpers. It's those OTHER PARTS that make the difference in you getting results.

Taking lots of ascorbic acid mistakenly, thinking that it's the same as the vitamin C complex, will create deficiencies of the other vitamin factors leading to bleeding gums and varicose veins.


But WHY don't VITAMIN COMPANIES make vitamins from natural sources anymore?
It's just too expensive. The profitability isn't there. Do you realize how cheap it is to make synthetic vitamins? Synthetic vitamin E, for example, has a mark up of 3500%, and that is for a $5.00 bottle of vitamin E that you can buy at the drug store. Many natural vitamin companies make only 6% profit.

Below are companies that make synthetic vitamins.

  • Hoffman LaRoche, in one plant, produces 350 tons of synthetic beta carotene per year.
  • Eastman Chemical Co. produces alpha Tocopherols from soy beans.
  • Merck Pharmaceutical Co. produces pure vitamin fractions used in virtually every nutritional supplement whether found in a drug store or health store.

Dr. Royal Lee's Rat Study 

Two groups of nutrition-starved rats were involved.  One group was fed synthetic vitamins and the other group was fed whole food concentrates.  After one month, guess what happened?  The group of rats that were given the natural whole food concentrates improved 5%.  The group that consumed synthetic vitamins improved 50%.  The second month, the rats that were given whole food concentrates were another 5% better.  The rats fed synthetic vitamins improved another 50% and were normal.  After the third month, the rats that were fed whole food vitamins improved another 5% AND THE RATS THAT WERE FED SYNTHETIC VITAMINS ALL DIED.


Synthetic vitamins act like drugs forcing the body to change at a rapid rate.  Natural vitamins follow the body's natural healing and growth cycle (which is slow).  The rats that were fed natural whole food vitamins continued to improve 5% month after month.

Synthetic vitamins have a difficult time being ABSORBED.  It was reported in Tacoma, Washington that 250,000 pounds of undigested vitamins and minerals are pulled out of the sewage every six weeks.  In Salt Lake City, over 150 gallons of vitamin and mineral pills show up in their filters every month.  Metallic minerals and coal tar vitamins made from crushed up rocks and petroleum were not designed to be digested.  Even those pills listed as "all natural" often have fillers and coatings that inhibit digestion.

What is a real high potency vitamin? High potency applies to synthetic vitamins made with low cost ingredients in quantities much greater than your body requires. Natural vitamin complexes do their work in phenomenally SMALL doses.

POTENCY: refers to effective force, strength, powerfulness and energy.

THE BODY REJECTS FOREIGN CHEMICAL VITAMIN FRACTIONS. The body is designed to process food and the vitamins naturally occurring in food are in small doses.

Synthetic vitamins actually deplete natural vitamins from your body the same way eating cooked foods depletes your body of enzymes, the same way drinking distilled water depletes you of minerals and the same way using glycerin soaps depletes you of (skin) oils making your skin dry.

Why do SYNTHETIC VITAMINS cause vitamin deficiencies?
This is how you get vitamin deficiencies. The more reserves of vitamins your body has the longer it will take for you to notice a deficiency, but sooner or later it will show up. A good analogy would be distilled water. Distilled water has the minerals taken out. This water has a memory of the missing minerals and acts like a vacuum pulling those same minerals out of your body to replace what was removed. Another example is processed flour products. Have you ever wondered why they have to enrich these products with B vitamins? If they don't, eating the refined flour will deplete your vitamin B reserves. Then by using SYNTHETIC vitamins to enrich these flour products, you are getting not only counterfeit but incomplete B vitamins. This process will start to deplete your reserves of the missing factors and eventually leave you with a deficiency.

Many of the studies involving isolated synthetic fractions of vitamins are equivalent to doing a study of a steering wheel to see if it functions as an automobile.
