Natural electrolyte drink

During a grueling spin class or rigorous exercise session, you may think of reaching for a neon-green Gatorade or a PowerBar Endurance Sports Drink. Yes, these drinks are better than nothing, but are they the best choice for replenishing lost electrolytes?

You need these 4 electrolytes

Excessive sweating results in a loss of water AND important electrolytes.  The four major electrolytes that you need to properly rehydrate your body are:

Not replacing these 4 major electrolytes may result in:

        Muscle cramping

Magnesium is especially helpful for preventing cramping and headaches, plus helps with oxygen utilization and added energy. Trace mineral electrolytes are important as well.

Most electrolyte sports drinks come up short

Gatorade is the most popular sports drink for rehydration. Some question whether it is even good for you.

Gatorade, PowerBar, Powerade and other popular electrolyte sports drinks only say they include 1 or 2 electrolytes, potassium and sodium.

Questionable additives

Guzzling sports drinks can also add calories, sugar, and toxins from artificial flavors, sweeteners and artificial colors. Some have High Fructose Corn Syrup and numerous chemical ingredients.

Do you really want these additional burdens when you are trying to rehydrate. Recent research even questions the validity of carb loading before strenuous exercise.

A more perfect rehydration solution

Where can you find an electrolyte solution that contains the 4 main electrolytes, plus valuable trace mineral electrolytes?

The ocean.

Yes. Low sodium concentrated sea minerals naturally contains all of these.

Why No Sports Drink is Complete Without Magnesium

When your body sweats out other electrolytes, it also sweats out magnesium. Not replacing the electrolyte magnesium can be costly.

Magnesium is required in over 300 biochemical cell reactions

It is needed for muscle contraction and relaxation

It is needed for the production of ATP, the body's major energy producer

It helps in lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease

Magnesium is needed for muscle repair after exercise

A deficiency of magnesium is often associated with structural damage of muscle cells, which hampers the process of recovery after exercise. It is a vital component that assists in muscle repair and improves athletic performance.

Hence, those who are involved in sports or are actively involved in physical exercise should consume a sufficient amount of magnesium.

Benefits of Chloride

Chloride works with other electrolytes to maintain proper fluid and electrolyte balance within the body. It, therefore, plays a vital role in treating dehydration.

Chloride, the negative ion, acts as a neutralizing agent that balances positive electrolyte ions, helping the body to maintain proper alkaline levels.  It balances positive magnesium, potassium and sodium ions, which helps to maintain optimal pH in the body.

Chloride helps to regulate the flow of fluids between blood vessels and body tissue.

Studies have found that seawater has almost the same percentage of chloride electrolyte as our body fluids. (Read the full article, natural electrolyte drink)

Make a Great Sports Electrolyte Drink at Home

It is easy and simple to prepare an all natural electrolyte solution using Ionic Sea Minerals.  Here are the ingredients:

1 teaspoon of Ionic Sea Minerals

        1 liter of water

1/8 teaspoon of sea salt (optional, for added sodium during heavy sweating, to help prevent muscle cramps)

For flavoring, lemonade does a good job of masking the somewhat bitter taste of the electrolytes. In a taste test of a number of natural lemonade mixes, Crystal Lite Pure Lemonade won hands down. Two packets in a quart is what is recommended. Of course, you can do your own taste tests to see what lemonade flavoring works best for you.

Another option is to add the above ingredients to 2 or 3 liters of water, and skip the flavoring. Some people are quite satisfied with the slightly salty taste.

Conclusion, Natural Electrolyte Drink

A natural electrolyte sports drink should have a good balance of chloride, magnesium, potassium and sodium, plus trace mineral electrolytes

A sea mineral concentrate contains all of these

Next time, instead of reaching for a Gatorade, PowerBar or Powerade, why not put together your own?  Drink with water, or flavor and sweeten to taste.
